India to act quickly on PDPA, internet regulation

Indian Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology and Law & Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad announced his plan of attack regarding the country’s Personal Data Protection Act and IT Act, ETTelecom.com reports. At a news conference following his election as telecom minister last week, Prasad said his first priority is to take the PDPA to Parliament before shifting his focus to reforming intermediary guidelines in the IT Act. “In telecom, I will first need to ascertain the status of the sector before evolving the action plan. We will try to lake a long-term view of the sectoral issues and address in the long-term interest of the sector,â€� Prasad said. Also, Tech2 reports India is behind in compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation and such lagging may be costly for Indian firms.
