Austrian DPA issues 18M euro fine for alleged GDPR violations

The European Data Protection Board announced the Austrian Data Protection Authority issued an 18 million euro fine against Österreichische Post AG for alleged violations of the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Following an oral hearing it conducted, the DPA said it found evidence that the ÖPAG processed the political affiliation of data subjects and “further processing of data on package frequency and the frequency of relocations for the purpose of direct marketing,� both of which are infractions under the European rules. The ÖPAG has four weeks after receiving the penalty notice to challenge the fine with the Federal Administrative Court.
